More popularly known as linocut, linoleum block printing is a relief printmaking technique where unwanted areas of linoleum are carved away.  Flat, clearly defined imagery is left behind.

 

Linoleum is softer and easier to carve than wood. The surface is rolled with ink and then paper gets laid on top. The paper is then rubbed manually with a spoon or similar tool, or as in our case, is pushed through a printing press.
