The Ritual of Sharpening Pt3

There’s a quiet ritual that happens before I start a project. It’s the resharpening of the tools.

It’s not glamorous, and it doesn’t get filmed for Instagram reels (maybe next time), but it’s one of the most meaningful parts of the process.
A few slow passes on the Flexcut SlipStrop, some of their gold compound, and you can feel the edge come back to brand new. I’m not just preparing to carve, I’m resetting my focus, honoring the tool that’s helps me make so much. I know it may sound corny, but honestly it feels like opening up a Christmas present in the 80’s as a young kid… it’s damn right awesome!!

Over time you can watch the handles darken. This reminds me of all the hard work I’ve put in. These aren’t disposable tools, They’re the kind you build a body of work with.

These tools remind me to slow down, to be present, to respect the process. They connect me to the roots of printmaking, to every artist who has ever picked up a blade and decided to make something by hand.
Every day I’m thankful for that little company in Erie PA, you make my life and my passions so much better.
Thanks for reading this three-part series!
